Oahu: Getting Around

Getting around Oahu is easy and fun, whether it is by car, bus, taxi, moped, motorcycle or bicycle. It takes less than 3 hours to drive once around the island of Oahu, but much more time should be planned in to enjoy the many sightseeing stops along the way.

For an inexpensive way to see the island and its people, take a ride on the island's public transportation system, called TheBus. There are also taxis all over Waikiki which will take you anywhere you want to go. In addition, there are numerous shuttle services to and from Oahu's shopping centers, Pearl Harbor, Aloha Tower Marketplace and the Honolulu International Airport. Check with the concierge or the front desk clerk of your hotel.

Every major car rental company also has office locations in Waikiki and near the Airport, or you can book online below. For the adventuresome, there are a number of companies in Waikiki that rent mopeds, motorcycles and bicycles, as well as exotic cars, which provide alternate ways to explore the island.

There are three major freeways on Oahu (H-1, H-2 and H-3) and numerous connecting highways and thoroughfares. Here is a tip to better acquaint you with Oahu's roads: east is commonly called the Diamond Head direction; west is called the Ewa direction; Mauka is towards the mountains; and Makai is towards the ocean.
